1. Tell me about your company – what industry you are in and what does your business do?
Devcon Civil provides civil engineering and construction services in NSW. Devcon was established in 1956 and is a third generation, family owned and operated civil construction company. With decades of experience in roads, civil, concrete, drainage, kerb and gutter and associated works, we are masters of our craft. Our team network spans across Sydney and NSW to deliver projects that not only meet but exceed client expectations. We are driven by a sustainable approach to everything we do and continually seek new methods and innovative solutions.
2. Can you please provide some top level information about your organisation, such as size, number of staff, office locations or similar?
Approximately 50 permanent staff members and office located in Sydney and Newcastle.
3. What motivated you to pursue certification?
Certification was prompted specifically because we could see the value that potential clients were placing on ISO certified organisations. After going through the process of attaining the certification and now managing it, we can see the value that it brings to the organisation in terms of continuous improvement and applying a systems-based thinking across all operations.
4. What was your experience like when working through the certification process with Global-Mark?
Global-Mark have made the process as easy as it can be. Our Client Manager made sure he understood our business before assessing our systems so he could then provide us with helpful feedback on how we can make improvements that will still ensure we are meeting the criteria for ISO certification whilst also continuing to gain efficiencies for our operations and ultimately, for our clients.
5. What is the result you’ve achieved, for example, are you satisfied with the result?
Whilst adopting the systems mindset did prove to be challenging for some parts of our business and did take a few years for Devcon as a whole to shift the internal culture, the systems that are continually evolving and are certified against ISO standards are now recognised as being one of the key factors in the organisations development which has resulted in us being able to service a larger range of clients and take on more challenging work.
6. Have you observed any additional business advantages that arose as a result of achieving certification?
Efficiencies achieved through systems-based thinking for all activities has resulted in Devcon being able to service clients and complete projects that would have previously been difficult to manage.
