International Women’s Day

Joanne HurstIn the Media, Meet the Team

As we mark International Women’s Day today, let us recognise Micah Kelly, who sits on Global-Mark’s Advisory Committee, and all the incredible women who inspire us with their passion and drive for excellence to achieve their goals.

“As a young child, I dreamed of being a lawyer but I left school at 14 and just drifted living on the streets and being nearly blind I was a ball breaker, until I met my Husband, Lloyd. I am visually impaired but Lloyd believed anyone can do anything.

I needed to be well organised whilst I studied, had a part time job and 2 small children to get to school and activities. I went to university and achieved my first degree in a Bachelor of Business.  Lloyd believed you celebrate the differences between men and women and so do I. I knew I wanted to study law so I went on to apply for Law School.

Raising my young family, working part-time and studying, with the challenges of being visually impaired was the best training to working in a Law Firm.  I treated my colleagues as I expected to be treated. I saw no need to be tougher, louder or stronger than my male colleagues. You earn respect.

With my daughters I raised them to be independent, free thinking and problem solvers but they always came first. Sport became an important part of a successful career in Law. As a senior solicitor in a large Firm in London, the work was high pressure. Long distance running provided stress relief and an opportunity to remain focused. I think I have completed over 60 marathons and I lost count of the half marathons!

2023 was a great year for me in sport. I was selected to represent NSW in the Dragon Boat team. Then I went on to being selected for rowing in the para athlete to race a single scull. Later that year, I represented Australia in Aurora (The Australian Dragon Boat team) in Rayong, Thailand.

Again, being well organised helped with the discipline of training for both sports at an elite level plus working as a part-time lawyer. With a background of running tight timetables, I have learnt you work smarter not harder and I strongly believe in work life balance. Family time is most important, I have great support from family in all my endeavours albeit Lloyd has now passed on 9 years ago.”
